200th for Wakefield
At the ripe age of 45 years old Tim Wakefield recorded his 200th win. He is the second oldest pitcher in Major League history to get his 200th W. It is an incredible feat to be able to continue pitching at the highest level of baseball into your forties. The rule of thumb has always been that pitchers arms slowed down as they got older. Normally only pitchers that have pin-point accuracy and can change speeds on their pitches can even come close to pitching into their forties. But that has never been the case with Wakefield. He has never been able to throw hard and it is nearly impossible to control where a knuckle-ball goes. That is what make Wakefield special. He just gets people out and eats up innings (it also helps to have the Red Sox offense behind him for so long). Its once in a generation that there is a successful knuckleballer in the Majors. It just so happens this one is on the Red Sox. Wakefield will forever be a part of Red Sox lore for the good; playing a key role in the best comeback in MLB history against the Yankees in ‘04. And the not so good; giving up the walkoff homerun to Aaron Boone of the Yankees in game 7 of the ALCS in ‘03. Congrats Tim and good luck on getting win number 201.
