Status of Red Sox Nation
Lately it has been a little rough to be a Red Sox fan. The collapse, beer drinking controversy, and the loss of both Terry Francona and Theo Epstein certainly is not good but it is not something Sox fans haven’t had to endure before. The last few years we have been spoiled. Ever since the curse was broken some fans have forgotten about all of the heartbreak.
Bill Buckner in the ‘86 World Series. Bucky F—-ing Dent’s homerun in ‘78. Aaron Boone’s walkoff in ‘03 ALCS. All of the “1918” chants from Yankee fans. The sting from all of these surpasses any discomfort felt from last season’s collapse. It was the feeling of being so close to finally breaking the curse and having it all fall apart in front of our eyes that hurt so bad back then.
Now the Sox already have 2 World Series victories under their belts in the last decade. And of course they still found another way to break Sox fans hearts. They just love to keep it interesting. This season there was a storybook ending and the Red Sox just happened to be on the wrong end. This is still better being the team that always seemed to find a way to lose when it mattered and never being able to win the “big one”.
I am not saying to be happy with the result of last season because I am certainly not. But Red Sox Nation has been here before. The cathedral better known as Fenway Park will reopen in the Spring, the Sox will take the field, and “Sweet Caroline” will be sung in the seventh inning. It is just going to be a long winter before that happens. But the Red Sox Nation can wait. We need the off-season to regain our optimism like so many other off-seasons of the past.
